Registered Nurse (RN)
In primary care teams, the registered nurse (RN) works side-by-side with the physician and other health care professionals as partners.
RNs are crucial to the team’s achievement of better screening and health promotion, early detection, chronic disease management and enhanced access. RNs take a comprehensive, holistic approach that isn’t limited to chronic disease management.
Job Responsibilities of Registered Nurses
- Observing and recording patient behavior
- Performing physical exams and diagnostic tests
- Collecting patient health histories
- Counseling patients and their families
- Educating patients about treatment plans
- Administering medications, wound care, and other treatment options
- Interpreting patient information and making decisions about necessary actions, where appropriate
- Consulting with nurse supervisors and physicians to determine best treatment plans for patients
- Directing and supervising the care of other healthcare professionals, including licensed practical nurses, certified nurse assistants, and nurse aides
- Conducting research to improve patient outcomes and healthcare processes
Qualifications
- Minimum undergraduate degree in Nursing from a recognized institute
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
- Demonstrates an understanding of current trends and concepts relative to professional Nursing
- Exceptional oral and written communications skills
- Demonstrated commitment to consistent attendance and punctuality
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary stressful environment
- Ability to work well with others in a team approach, and adapt to changing situations
- Knowledge of Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) standards
