Nurses Shortage in Ontario
Rest of the Country RN to Population Ratio 814
RNs per 100,000 people
Ontario RN to Population Ratio
665 RNs per 100,000 people
The Nursing shortage has long been predicted by the Canadian Nurses Association as a result of transformation in health-care needs and an increase in the aging population. The shortage has further been amplified by the pandemic, leading to inadequacy in staffing and closures of hospital units.
This condition had a significant impact on mental-health toll on nurses and resulted in some quitting their jobs.
In 2020, Ontario had the lowest nurse-per-capita ratio in Canada, with 665 registered nurses (RNs) for every 100,000 people while the Canadian average is 814; This also means, Ontario would require 22,003 more working Registered Nurses just to reach the national average.
The RNAO (Registered Nurses Association Ontario) has put forward a list of recommendations to the government to address the staffing shortage including fast tracking internationally educated nurses to become registered in Ontario.
To help address the regional nursing shortage, Trillium Med Village is collaborating with its stakeholders to rebuild the healthcare economy by helping the Internationally Educated Nurses to gain their practical experience and language proficiency, while supporting important roles within community retirement homes, nursing homes and long-term care facilities. This has further enabled our nursing staff at the healthcare facilities to complete other critical and more specialized tasks across units where urgent care is required.
The placement offers International Educated Nurses a pathway to gain practical experience and full-time work opportunity once they complete the program.
Trillium Med Village will provide the participants with the following:
- Gain the required practical experience (including the SPEP for eligible participants*)
- Develop communication and cultural awareness skills
- Participate in professional development workshops
- Mentoring and Networking
- Build a Nursing community for life-long learning
*The participants will be paid during the CDTP-IEN program.
